The Northern Wilderness, Emergency and Sports Medicine or “Compass” elective is unique to the UP Campus. This optional elective gives participating students an opportunity to learn more about how to care for patients sustaining emergent wilderness and sports related injuries outside of the hospital system. The Compass elective is a longitudinal elective primarily occurring over the 3rd year.

Curriculum for this elective includes didactics paired with related outdoor activities, a day hike experience, and participation in the Outdoor Emergency Care Course through the National Ski Patrol. Interested students can continue on and work toward full National Ski Patrol membership. Students are provided with significant volunteer and community service opportunities and have a chance to experience the wonderful environment of the Upper Peninsula while learning valuable skills they can use as future physicians.
