SPECIAL
NEEDS PROGRAMS
Sibshops
Brothers and
sisters of children with disabilities now have a chance to meet
monthly and talk with other kids whose brothers and sisters have
special needs. They'll have an opportunity to talk about the good
and not-so-good parts of having a sibling with a disability. Brothers
and sisters may have feelings that are difficult to express, even
to a friend: sadness that a sister cannot learn things that others
take for granted, anger when a brother's behavior problems prevent
the family from doing things other families do, or the special pride
with a sibling with a disability learns a basic but important life
skill after months or years of practice. At Sibshops, siblings
will share these feelings with others who truly understand. Most
importantly though, Sibshops are fun! Participants play
new games, cook lunches, and make new friends. Small participation
fee.
Kids
On The Block Puppet Shows
This puppet
troupe talks to children (ages 4-12 years) with humor, candor, and
sensitivity about topics of disability awareness, social concerns,
educational differences, and medical issues. In upbeat, insightfully
scripted presentations and a period following in which young members
of the audience get to ask questions directly to the characters,
the Kids On The Block provide children with an unforgettable
educational experience because the "kids" so vividly and effectively
model relationships between disabled and non-disabled people. Topics
include: cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, learning disabilities, bicycle
and car safety, and hearing impairments. The Kids On The Block
puppet performances are great for school classrooms or can also
be presented during youth activity programs. Free service. Contact
Candy Weber at 225-3297 to schedule a show.
