Educational Excellence in an Exceptional Environment

A dually accredited ACGME / AOA program

(click here to view video for resident candidates)

The Family Medicine Residency Program in Marquette, Michigan, is a rural, community-based, university-affiliated training program based at a 315-bed regional medical center. We are just a stone's throw from Lake Superior, the largest body of fresh water in the world. After completing a full day of training with dedicated physicians, you can enjoy all the opportunities our environment has to offer in a community recently named one of ten All-American Cities.

Marquette General Health System has been involved in resident education for more than 30 years and currently sponsors both osteopathic and allopathic Family Medicine residency programs.

INDIVIDUALIZED TRAINING IS THE HALLMARK OF OUR FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN MARQUETTE

Why Marquette?

Train in a pristine setting with clear skies, clean water, the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). . . one of few rural places in the nation with a 352-bed regional medical center staffed with world-class physicians.

There are no other graduate programs in medicine here; our residents work directly with attending physicians in specialties like oncology, cardiology, rheumatology and many others.

You'll receive a well-rounded residency experience in a federally designated regional medical center with 11,000 annual inpatient discharges and more than 200,000 outpatient registrations a year.

The full-time Family Medicine faculty are board certified in numerous specialties and carry an active patient caseload.

A diverse clinic practice serves 3,000 patient visits per month in a contemporary office setting. Our graduates have said that their clinical experience has exceeded their expectations.

We attract excellent applicants from all over the country. The result is a diverse and stimulating group of colleagues with whom to work, play, learn and grow.

Practical and useful behavioral science allows residents to critique their interactions with patients.

Outreach activities and preceptorships in various Upper Michigan communities provide the option to experience small town medicine.

The presence of the nation's only Olympic Education Center at neighboring Northern Michigan University strengthens the Sports medicine curriculum and provides additional recreational resources for residents and their families.

Marquette General Hospital's Board of Trustees is committed to providing a program of excellence to meet the needs of the hospital, community and region.

Our community offers an excellent public school system for families of all ages.

Our program received full accreditation by the Residency Review Committee in 2007, citing no deficiencies. In November, 2007, The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) granted Cotinuing Approval of the Family Practice residency training program with four positions at LECOM/Maraquette General Health System with re-inspection in three years, with three years as the maximum length of approval from programs having completed their first inspection cycle.

As a university community with healthcare as its primary industry, Marquette is a cosmopolitan small town offering the best of many worlds. The Marquette community was recently named one of ten All-American Cities. Bike Magazine declared Marquette the number two city in America for Biking and Living in its June 2001 issue.

Water sports and skiing can be enjoyed only 15 minutes from the hospital, and family activities are available throughout the year. Marquette County has 85K of groomed cross-country ski trails and several Nordic skiing events. The university and community offer varied cultural events, and the city's people represent the small town America of Norman Rockwell.
