The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSU-CHM) Upper Peninsula Region began as the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation (UPHEC) in 1974 to coordinate the training of physicians as a campus of the MSU-CHM in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In the 35 years that have since transpired, the organization has grown and expanded to play a leading role in healthcare education across the U.P.

Our primary goal at the MSU-CHM U.P. Region is to enhance the quality of life in the U.P. by providing healthcare career opportunities for our young people and training physicians interested in serving rural and underserved communities. Our efforts have proved to be successful through the following initiatives:

MSU-CHM: The MSU-CHM U.P. Region serves as one of seven campuses across the state providing clinical training for medical students from MSU-CHM. Each year, up to 16 students are selected for the Rural Physician Program (RPP), which offers enriched training to students who have an interest and passion for providing care to patients in rural, underserved areas. Our RPP students receive an excellent clinical education from volunteer faculty physicians from Marquette General Health System and other Upper Peninsula hospitals and clinics. The campus is a popular training site. To be considered, students must apply and go through an additional, separate interview process.

MARQUETTE FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM: The MSU-CHM U.P. Region facilitates the training of newly graduated physicians from all over the world to spend their three years of Family Medicine residency. Our unopposed program (we focus exclusively on Family Medicine) sponsors both osteopathic and allopathic Family Medicine programs. Our university affiliated (Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine for allopathic and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine for osteopathic) training program is based at Marquette General Health System, a 315-bed regional hospital.

PREMED OUTREACH: MSU-CHM U.P. Region serves as a coordinating body for students interested in volunteering, shadowing and mentoring with Upper Peninsula physicians. We provide consulting and counseling for students applying to medical school and offer opportunities for research involvement.

QUALITY OF CARE INITIATIVES: Through successful healthcare initiatives and grant supported research projects, MSU-CHM U.P. Region programs have touched the lives of patients and providers across the U.P.
