MSU Medical School Names U.P. Campus Graduates and Incoming Med Students

MARQUETTE – The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSU-CHM) and the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation (UPHEC) recently honored eight graduates of the U.P. Campus at the commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2007.  The physicians are part of the Rural Physician Program and were trained at MSU’s Upper Peninsula Campus which is in its thirty-third year of operation in the U.P.  After their first two years in East Lansing, MSU-CHM students spend their clinical years at the U. P. Campus, with most of their training at Marquette General Hospital.

Christopher A. Dehlin, M.D., from Gladstone, Michigan, did his undergraduate study at Michigan Tech and will be doing his residency in Family Medicine at the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program in Marquette, Michigan.

Timothy M. Ehle, M.D., from Rudyard, Michigan, will be doing his residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in Rochester, Minnesota.

Katriina M. Hopper, M.D., from Skandia, Michigan, did her undergraduate study at NMU and will be doing her residency in Internal Medicine at the Yale – New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut.

Margaret B. Lekander, M.D., from Howell, Michigan, will be doing her residency in Family Medicine at Brown Medical School Memorial Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.

Karl M. Meisel, M.D., from Rochester Hills, Michigan, will be doing his residency in Neurology at Brown Medical School Memorial Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.

Lauren E. Wadland Meisel, M.D., from Okemos, Michigan, will be doing her residency in Pediatrics at Brown Medical School Memorial Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.

Corinne B. Peimer, M.D., from Buffalo, New York, will be doing her residency in Family Medicine/Preventive Medicine at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon.

Danielle L. Waggoner, M.D., from Negaunee, Michigan, did her undergraduate study at NMU and will be doing her residency in Internal Medicine at the Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The Class of 2007 chose Dr. James Addison as the keynote speaker.  Dr. Addison, a local emergency medicine specialist, is an alumnus of Wayne State University in Detroit and is the Internal Medicine Clerkship director for the Upper Peninsula Rural Physician Program.

The graduating class chose to honor doctors Raghu Kasetty, M.D. from Escanaba, Michigan, and Kristina VanderMark, M.D. from Marquette, Michigan, with the Outstanding Faculty Award.  The Resident Teaching Award went to Jennifer Dehlin, M.D. and Emily Godec, M.D., both second-year residents. The Educational Enrichment Award went to Jean Brown, R.N. and Fred Robare. And this year’s Gold Humanism Resident Teaching Award went to Chris Dums, M.D., also a second-year resident.

The graduates participated in the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine ‘hooding’ ceremony at commencement in East Lansing on May 12, 2007.

In July, the U.P. Campus will welcome the Class of 2009 as they begin their third year of medical school in Marquette.  They are Davita Burkhead-Weiner, West Bloomfield, Michigan; Daniel Danczyk, Jackson, Michigan; Katrina “Katie” Kreft, Traverse City, Michigan; Meredith Rumon, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Tihele Walkowsky, Ketchikan, Alaska; Jeffery Wheeler, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

This spring, the U.P. Campus accepted eight students for the Class of 2011 who will begin their medical education this fall in East Lansing.  They are Joseph Bettendorf, St. Cloud, Minnesota, MTU (BS) and NMU (MS); Kristin Marie Busch, Cicero, Indiana; David Buzanoski, Newport, Maine; Maura Davenport, Marquette, Michigan; Stacey LeJeune, Dodgeville/ Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin and NMU; Thomas Massie, Sundell, Michigan; Louie Ostola, Ishpeming, Michigan and NMU; Michelle Riccio, Iron Mountain, Michigan and Michigan Tech.
