MARQUETTE – David Luoma, MD, has successfully completed the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Recertification Examination. Dr. Luoma is the CEO of the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation and Community Assistant Dean of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s UP Campus in Marquette, Michigan, as well as a family medicine physician at Marquette’s FamilyCare Doctors.
Dr. Luoma was originally certified in 1982 by the American Board of Family Medicine, the second largest medical specialty board in the United States. The ABFM requires certification in this specialty every seven years. Board certification recognizes a standard of excellence in knowledge and practice for physicians who not only certify via the examination process, but who also work diligently on the maintenance of these skills during the seven-year cycle between examinations.
ABFM was founded in 1969 as a voluntary, not-for-profit, private organization whose purposes include improving the quality of medical care available to the public. It establishes and maintains standards of excellence by improving medical education standards and determining the fitness of specialists in Family Medicine. ABFM is a component organization of the American Board of Medical Specialties, which is the main certifying group for all medical specialties in the United States.
In addition to his board certification in family medicine, Dr. Luoma is board certified in Geriatrics and is certified in Travel Medicine.
