September 29, 2006, MARQUETTE – Perry Pugno, MD, MPH, CPE, nationally respected speaker and Director of the Division of Medical Education for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) will kick-off this year’s retreat with a lecture entitled “Common Dilemmas in Family Medicine Education.”
Dr. Pugno will speak to students, residents and faculty on Thursday, October 5, 2006, at 3 p.m. during a pre-retreat session. The session will also include a discussion entitled “Problem Solving Educational Dilemmas” facilitated by Dr. Randy Card of FamilyCare Doctors and Associate Director of the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program.
The Michigan State University Family Practice Residency Network exists for the purpose of sharing resources, working together on common goals, and encouraging collaborative projects. The Network also supports the work of individual residency programs.
The retreat offers an opportunity for faculty and residents of MSU-affiliated programs to share their experiences and work together to problem-solve Network-wide issues. The objective of the retreat is for participants to: have an updated understanding of issues affecting family medicine and family medicine residency training; develop new ideas for residency curriculum; develop and strengthen professional contacts; and understand Network goals and plans, and strengthen professional contacts; and understand Network goals and plans, and participate in Network planning for the future.
Dr. William Short, Director, Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program and staff physician at FamilyCare Doctors, will kick-off the retreat Friday morning with an introduction to Marquette keyed to participants from the Lower Peninsula and else where.
Dr. Gordon Baustian, Program Director for the Cedar Rapids Medical Education Foundation, will provide the keynote address entitled “Crumbs or the Whole Loaf.”
The remainder of the morning will be spent discussing issues raised by the speakers and presenting possible approaches to meeting educational challenges.
The afternoon will be spent touring the residency and hiking Sugarloaf Mountain, after the presentation of the Lachance Award for visionary leadership.

About Dr. Pugno:
Dr. Pugno is the Director of the Division of Medical Education for the American Academy of Family Physicians, where he is responsible for AAFP initiatives related to medical school and residency education, including supervision of the Residency Assistance Program (RAP) and providing staff support for legislative advocacy. He was a residency director for more than 20 years.
About Dr. Baustian:
Dr. Baustian completed his residency in family medicine at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. He was in solo private practice for 4 years in a small southeastern Iowa town, then 4 years in a group practice in Lansing, prior to joining the residency teaching faculty. He has been with the Cedar Rapids Medical Education Foundation for 17 years and has been Program Director for the past 11 years.
