Are there opportunities to practice and study medicine in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula? Do we have programs directed toward K-12 and undergraduate students interested in health care careers? Is there really a medical school in the UP? You betcha!
Now go tell someone.
Your help is needed to get the word out to medical students, medical residents and physicians potentially interested in studying, working, living and learning right here in your community. We invite you to encourage your relatives, friends and neighbors enrolled in medical school, a medical residency program or currently practicing medicine elsewhere to get in touch with us about exciting, unique and fulfilling opportunities up north here in the UP!
Who are WE? UPHEC -- the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation. UPHEC trains medical students and secures clinical training placements for them in rural health care settings throughout the region with a goal of improving the training and distribution of physicians while facilitating patient access to care. Based in Marquette, UPHEC has operated the UP campus of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine since 1974 and the Marquette Family Medicine Residency program since 1979.
Health careers and education for UP residents at the K-12, college, professional school and continuing education levels are promoted region-wide by UPHEC, in cooperation with the Northern Area Health Education Center and local health professions schools, universities and K-12 school systems.
UPHEC partners with the area's hospitals, rural health clinics, tribal health sites and senior care facilities to meet an ongoing and growing demand for nurses, physicians, dentists, behavioral health practitioners and allied health professionals. Opportunities abound for qualified individuals seeking unique clinical medical study experiences in rural health care and/or community-based health research settings. UPHEC also provides offerings for those interested in pursuing sports medicine and family medicine in beautiful, relaxed North Woods settings. We take full advantage of the state-of-the-art Regional Referral Center at Marquette General as well as our many excellent small town hospitals and offices.
Whom do we seek? Current programs target: 3rd and 4th year medical students from any LCME-accredited or AOA-accredited U.S. medical school interested in receiving clinical elective credit for their course of study; 4th year medical students interested in a family medicine residency in the UP; new physicians interested in rural practice in family medicine and a range of medical specialties UP-wide; college undergraduates in their junior or senior years of study interested in applying to medical school and eventually practicing in the UP; and high school seniors interested in a future health career who wish to apply to our Summer 2007 AGES Geriatric Education Scholars Internship Program with paid internships at area nursing homes and senior care facilities in Marquette and several other UP communities.
UPHEC is particularly interested in recruiting folks who have lived in, attended school in or have had prior contact with life in the UP. But, all interested individuals are welcome and encouraged to contact us. Some financial support for travel, housing and study may be available to those eligible.
How can you help? Thank you for asking! You can tell a friend, neighbor, relative or friend-of-a-friend about our programs and this call-out effort -- and ask them to get in touch with UPHEC. We can be reached at 906-228-7970, via e-mail at uphec@mgh.org or by snail-mail at UPHEC, 418 W. Magnetic Street, Marquette, MI 49855. Learn more about UPHEC online at www.mgh.org/uphec.
