UPHEC Bids Farewell to Dr. Dan Mazzuchi

October 25, 2006

Daniel Mazzuchi, MD, one of four MGHS representatives on the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation (UPHEC) Board of Directors, former UPHEC CEO, and one-time Mayor of Marquette, is resigning his seat after six-years of service as a voting member.

Dr. Mazzuchi’s last board meeting will be October 26, 2006. At the meeting his accomplishments will be acknowledged and he will be presented a scrapbook commemorating his 30 years of service to UPHEC.

Dr. Mazzuchi served as UPHEC’s CEO for thirteen years prior to stepping down and joining the board in 2000. He originally joined UPHEC in 1976, and he has worked with UPHEC and MSU ever since, including positions as the Community Assistant Dean and MSU’s Associate Dean. In 1977, he spearheaded the creation of the UP’s only residency program which accepted its first group of residents in 1979.

All told, Dr. Mazzuchi committed 30 years of his career to building a solid educational foundation for aspiring physicians dedicated to the idea of serving the underserved. His efforts are greatly responsible for the success of the current program which hosts 16 medical students and 18 residents per year. Over 50% of the Residents and nearly one-fourth of the students  have gone on to practice in the UP.

David Luoma, MD, Dr. Mazzuchi’s successor as UPHEC’s CEO said, “Dan’s foresight and commitment to the idea for establishing medical education in the UP has clearly benefited health care in our area. These were and are innovative programs that have been nationally recognized and are proudly supported by MSU and Marquette General as well as many other organizations and individuals.”

Dr. Mazzuchi’s commitment to our community goes far beyond his work in medical education. In 1973, he opened a private Nephrology practice, becoming Marquette’s first kidney specialist. That same year he joined the first of more than 20 community organizations he would participate in over the next 33 years. He has been Chief of Staff at MGH, Executive Director for the Marquette Medical-Dental Center, Co-Chair for the Marquette County United Way Campaign, President of the Marquette Area Chamber of Commerce and a charter member of the Marquette Symphony Orchestra’s board of directors, to name just a few.

Born and raised in Washington, DC, Dr. Mazzuchi earned his undergraduate degree from Holy Cross College in Worchester, Massachusetts, and his MD from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Following his internship, residency and Nephrology fellowship, he did a stint as a staff internist at the US Navel Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, before opening a private practice in Hagerstown, Maryland. But he longed for greener, or snowier, pastures and opened his Marquette practice after only two years in Maryland.

Along the way, he and Connie, his wife of nearly 50 years, raised seven children and managed to find time for hiking, fishing, golf and hunting.

Dr. Mazzuchi’s energy and wit will be sorely missed. We wish him and Connie all the best.
