Welcome to the U.P. Campus!
U.P. Campus Students
Every student must take and successfully pass 16 weeks of elective clerkships,
taken in four-week blocks.
Sample Schedule
Things to Consider:
- Students have the option of completing electives in Marquette, at any other community campus within the CHM system or at another medical school.
- You are only required to do ONE elective within the MSU-CHM system. Others can be taken within the system or through another medical school with the approval of the appropriate clinical department and the Community Assistant Dean.
- International electives will require extra time to set up and organize. You are responsible for inquiring about and setting up these electives. It is wise to get the ball rolling on these as soon as possible – getting started a year in advance is not too early.
- Do not forget to include Advanced Medicine, Senior Surgery and Psych II when preparing your schedule.
- The months of November, December and January are the prime time for residency interviewing. You are not to take time off from your clerkships to interview. Therefore, make sure that you have scheduled a block of time off for interviewing. The amount of time that you require will vary depending upon the number of programs you apply to (each interview will take a minimum of one day) and the geographical locations (you have to schedule travel time).
- We recommend that you schedule your Step II exams during a month off. Between travel and studying, this is the best way to ensure your success on the exams and in your clerkships.
- You may want to be in Marquette for March so you can be with your classmates when match results are announced.
In January or February of your third year you will be meeting with Patti Copley, Dr. Luoma and Connie Miller to begin planning your fourth year. If you have specific questions before then, please see one of us. We can always be reached at 906-228-7970.
Thank You & Have Fun!

General Information
- Clinical elective clerkships for credit are offered in the traditional four-week format. The beginning and ending dates follow the MSU academic schedule, but are somewhat negotiable.
- There are no additional fees or tuition charges for visiting students.
- Housing, travel costs and local transportation are the student's responsibility. Students will be provided a list of available housing. U.P. campus students have accommodated visiting students in the past. If you are interested in rooming with a U.P. campus student, please let us know.
- Free parking is provided by the hospital.
- Student evaluation is an on-going process, with a cumulative written evaluation completed at the end of the clerkship by the physician(s) with whom the student worked. Students should forward a blank copy of their school's evaluation form to our office and we will distribute it to the appropriate preceptors at the end of the elective.
- Working shifts vary tremendously across clerkships and preceptors, but it is expected students will work 40 hours per week.
- Students are required to wear hospital identification badges and short, white lab coats. Hospital identification badges will be issued at the start of the clerkship.
- All visiting students are required to attend a brief orientation the first morning of their clerkship. We will make arrangements with you for this orientation.
- Any schedule changes must be requested 30 days prior to the beginning of the clerkship.
Application Process

Our Facilities
UP campus educational programs are conducted at Marquette General Hospital and the Peninsula Medical Center. Marquette General Hospital, a federally designated Regional Referral Center, is a vital part of Marquette General Health System (MGHS), Upper Michigan's largest healthcare services provider.
As a 352-bed specialty care hospital, Marquette General receives patients from throughout Upper Michigan, and provides care in 57 specialties and subspecialties. Our 200 plus doctors work as a team with 2,900 support staff in caring for approximately 12,000 inpatients and more than 350,000 outpatients each year.
MGHS is just a stone's throw from Lake Superior, the largest body of fresh water in the world. After a full day of training with our enthusiastic and dedicated physicians, you can enjoy the opportunities our environment offers in a community recently named one of ten All-American Cities.
Residency Program
The Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program is a rural, community based, unopposed, university affiliated training program. We have 18 residents (six per year) and are approved to take allopathic and osteopathic graduates.
