John Lehtinen, M.D.

Credentials

Dr. Lehtinen is Program Director Emeritus of the Marquette Family Medicine Residency, serving as director for the first 20 years of the program. Dr. Lehtinen, born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, obtained his undergraduate training at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan, graduating with honors.

He attended Wayne State University in Detroit  for his Medical degree.  He completed his family practice residency training at St. John Hospital in Detroit, where he served as chief resident. Dr. Lehtinen was awarded the Mead Johnson Award for graduate education in family practice in 1976.

Upon completion of his residency, he served as Director of St. John Family Practice Residency Program and was selected as the hospital's Instructor of the Year in medical education in 1978.

He is an associate professor in the Department of Family Practice of Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine, and is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Wayne State University's School of Medicine. Dr. Lehtinen is certified by the American Board of Family Practice, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American Academy of Sports Physicians and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics and Sports Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Lehtinen directs teaching and precepting of the family practice residents as well as medical students on elective rotations. He is a manuscript and book reviewer for a number of medical publications, is Chief Medical officer for the United States Olympic Committee's Olympic Education Center located at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Team Physician for Northern Michigan University, and was the head physician for the U.S. Olympic Team for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Dr. Lehtinen garnered the MVP trophy during the International Senior Men's Hockey Tournament in September, 1994, in Porvoo, Finland. He is an avid hockey player and is the Associate Head Coach for the Marquette Electricians Midget AAA Hockey Team. His clinical interests include sports medicine, with over 30 years of experience, occupational medicine and addiction medicine. Personally, he enjoys hunting, fishing and gardening. He is married with two children.
