AGES 2008 Participation Sets Record Level

Marquette, MI - UPHEC sponsored 39 UP high school students at 14 long-term care sites in Summer 2009.

A total of 85 students have been trained and placed through AGES since 2006. Students led activities, "job shadowed" healthcare professionals and interacted one-to-one with elderly site residents.

AGES participants report that they are "very satisfied" with their educational placements and program content and would recommend the program to their friends. Many emjoyed their AGES experience so much that they remained on as volunteers at their assigned long-term care sites.

AGES alumni report that they are pursuing higher education studies in nursing, physical therapy and pre-medical studies and many report that they would like to pursue healthcare employment in the UP.

Some past AGES students have obtained their certifications and are working as CNAs.

The presentation titled "Area Geriatric Education Scholars Internship Program in Michigan's Upper Peninsula" was delivered as part of a session on "Issues in Long-Term Care and Hospice" sponsored by the APHA's Gerontological Health Section.
