Located in Marquette, Michigan, the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation (UPHEC) is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit corporation created in 1974. UPHEC administers the Upper Peninsula Campus of Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine. Through a formal partnership with MGHS, UPHEC also manages the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program.
UPHEC has proven experience in training physicians who return to underserved and rural communities within the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. UPHEC was also responsible for the development, implementation, and administration of the Marquette Family Medicine Residency program, whose physicians provide patient care with FamilyCare Doctors at Marquette General Health System.
UPHEC is also active in grant funded opportunities promoting the research endeavors of our students, residents and faculty, and serving as an innovative force in developing health care programs.

MSU and UPHEC join together to train medical students in the UP Summer of 1974 - First class arrives in Escanaba for 3.5 years of medical training. An innovative, community-based curriculum. |
1976-77 |
Hospital care clerkship begins at Marquette General Hospital for medical students. |
1978 |
Marquette Family Practice Residency Program begins at MGH. |
1984 |
Corporation reforms as a partnership between UPHEC, MGH, St. Francis - Marquette General takes over the Family Practice Residency Program. |
1980s |
There is further development of programs for medical students at MGH. Specialty rotations at the hospital increase. |
1980s |
Students change to more standardized curriculum, with basic science in East Lansing and the two clinical years in the UP. |
1980s |
UPHEC offices move from Escanaba to Marquette. |
1999 |
New corporation forms to manage medical students and residency training at MGH. Leadership of MGH and MSU recognize efficiency of combining administration, as well as opportunities to develop new projects. |
