Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program & Geriatrics Fellowship

A Message from the Residency Director - Stuart Johnson, D.O.

Dr. Stuart Johnson

All of us involved in the Family Medicine Residency Program here in Marquette, Michigan are very proud of what we have accomplished since our inception in 1979. We have graduated over 150, with the vast majority practicing family medicine in rural America – most here in the northern Midwest.

We take great pride in our ability to tailor training to the individual needs of each resident. With this in mind, we offer tracks for high volume obstetrics, rural emergency medicine, and rural hospitalist medicine. Getting the training one wants – and needs - is critical to our success as the changing face of primary medicine health care continues to occur. We have taken great pride in the development of our own version of a Patient Centered Medical Home, with Practice Partner EMR assisting in our patient management.

Sending residents during their second year to rural sites for at least one month has proven to be remarkably successful in giving a true flavor of this kind of medicine at the core of our mission. Many of these sites are run by alumni of the program, providing a continuous and strong bond to the training program. We look forward to continuing to be innovative as we adjust to the needs of our health care system. Being strongly supported by Marquette General Health System and it’s Accountable Care Organization – Superior Health Partners – remains essential to our growth and vitality.

Having dedicated much of my career in health care to the success of this program, I remain confident that we will continue to train the family physicians needed for the care of our population for decades to come.
