Program Focuses - As a student, you can focus on one of three clinical settings:
Acute Care, Inpatient Rehabilitation or Outpatient Orthopedic.
1. Acute Care
This is a dynamic, fast paced experience in a tertiary acute hospital.
A wide variety of patient diagnoses are seen: neurological, orthopedic,
cardiac, wound care, de-conditioned, and multi-trauma are the
most typical. You will have daily interaction with a wide variety
of health team members including physicians, physician assistants,
nurses, social workers, case managers, and occupational therapists.
Treatment philosophy for this practice area is based on function
and fast results.
2. Inpatient Rehabilitation
Experience in this team-focused area of physical therapy takes place
on the 16-bed Rehab Unit. Physiatrist's admit patients to the unit
and lead rehab treatment teams consist of physical, occupational,
speech, and recreation therapists, social workers, audiologists,
psychologists, and nursing staff. A variety of diagnoses are seen
with stroke, general orthopedic, and deconditioning
the most common. Other patient diagnoses seen include spinal
cord injury, brain injury, and amputee. Occasionally, patients with
multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Guillain-Barre’
syndrome are admitted. Patients admitted to the Inpatient Rehab
Unit are required to tolerate three hours of therapy each day and
to be medically stable before admission. Strict admission criteria
allow physical therapy students to have a rehab- focused experience
with minimal distraction due to significant medical problems or fatigue.
Outpatient services are also part of this focus area. Patients
with diagnoses similar to those encountered on the inpatient rehab
unit and patients with vestibular problems are seen.
3. Outpatient Orthopedic
A wide variety of patient diagnoses are seen during time spent
in this area including: athletic injuries, a spectrum of
post-surgical procedures, back and neck pain, and various work-related
injuries. There is a wide patient age demographic, ranging from
young to older adults.
Therapists working in this area use a wide range of evaluation
and treatment techniques. You will have an opportunity to integrate
much of what you have learned in school: McKenzie (MDT) approach, muscle
energy, myofascial release, joint mobilization and sport/activity
specific clinical and functional exercises.
