Speech-Language Pathologists

The speech-language pathologists at the Upper Michigan Rehabilitation Center are health care professionals educated and trained to evaluate and treat infants, children and adults with communication, cognitive or swallowing problems.

 

Service and Treatments

Speech-language pathologists provide a variety of professional services aimed at helping people develop effective life skills. These include:

Aphasia treatment to retrain speech and language skills

 

·

Treatment for voice disorders

 

·

Swallowing evaluation and treatment including radiographic exams

 

·

Improving functional communication for those with dysarthria or other speech production problems

 

·

Evaluation or referral services for those with alternative or augmentative communication needs

 

·

Providing service to infants and children with feeding and swallowing disorders

 

·

Providing individualized assessment and training for patients with augmentative communication needs using the Lingraphica TM system

 

·

Treatment for retraining cognitive skills including memory, problem solving and organization to maximize daily functioning in the home or work setting

 

·

Education on speech, language disorders, and prevention

 

·

Laryngectomy rehabilitation including voice restoration after tracheoesophageal puncture

 

· Evaluation and management services for tracheostomy and ventilator dependency

 

Dysphagia

Problems swallowing food or liquid, dysphagia can affect an individual’s nutritional, medical or social status. Dysphagia may be caused by a number of medical conditions including stroke, neurological diseases or disorders, head and neck cancer, surgery, aging, or the side effects of medication.

 

Symptoms of dysphagia may include:

·Coughing or choking with eating or drinking


·Feeling that food is stuck in your throat


·Difficulty chewing foods


·Wet or gurgly sounding voice with eating or drinking


·Drooling or problems swallowing saliva


·Heartburn or reflux


·Other related symptoms


A speech-language pathologist evaluates and develops an individualized treatment program for managing dysphagia in patients with these problems.
