Rule
To be accepted into the training program, Rule was required
to take a test based on a self-study module provided to her.
Only
by passing this test was she allowed to attend the training.
After the training, she had to take another test to become
certified. Both tests required a minimum score of 80 percent
to pass.
“
Both tests were difficult. There were a lot of questions that
could have gone either way,” Rule said.
The training was developed, conducted and reviewed by more
than 30 leading experts in the field of weight management.
It was
intended to prepare providers of comprehensive and integrated
weight management care, as well as to inform when and how to
refer patients to other specialists.
The program’s topics included environmental influences
on pediatric overweight issues; prevention of pediatric overweight
issues and obesity; medical assessment and management of pediatric
overweight issues; physical activity as treatment; nutrition
assessment and treatment; pediatric weight management programs;
behavioral management: assessment and interventions; and behavioral
management: client-centered counseling techniques.
A dietitian for 16 years, Rule earned her bachelor’s degree
from Northern Michigan University. She has been with MGHS for
six years.
