MGHS clinical psychologist has article published
in international psychology journal
Gary Wautier,
Ph.D., clinical psychologist at Marquette General Health System’s Upper Michigan Behavioral
Health Service, was recently published in an international psychology
journal.

Gary Wautier,
Ph.D.
Dr. Wautier’s 18-page article, titled “The Effects
of Ego Identity, Gender Role, and Attachment on Depression and
Anxiety in Young Adults,” was published in “Identity:
An International Journal of Theory and Research.” It was
based on a study he conducted in 1998 and 1999.
The study demonstrated that there is interaction among ego identity
(ideological and interpersonal ideas), gender role, and attachment
style and that these factors influence levels of depression and
anxiety in young adults.
The study also indicated these variables could have different
effects for men, women and certain ethnic groups.
The study has clinical applications in assessing and helping young adults
with anxiety and depression. Considering these variables while evaluating
and treating
patients can help determine how the variables investigated might be contributing
to the depression and/or anxiety experienced by the patient.
Wautier provides outpatient therapy and assessment services, as well as inpatient
psychological assessment for children, adolescents and adults at MGHS.
He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy and completed a
predoctoral internship with Wayne State University in the department of psychiatry
and
behavioral neurosciences. He specialized in child/adolescent clinical psychology.
Wautier obtained additional clinical experience at Hawthorn Center in Northville,
Mich., the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and Eastern Michigan University’s
Counseling Center. He also gained experience at a number of clinics in the
metro Detroit area.
After earning his Ph.D., Wautier obtained postdoctoral experience working
as a research associate with the department of psychiatry at the University
of
Michigan. His research focused on technology applications for mental health
assessment and treatment.
He has published other studies in the areas of autobiographical memory, analogical
reasoning and learning styles.
