practice physician earns travel medicine certificate

General Health System family practice physician Dr. David Luoma
has successfully passed the first International
Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) Certificate of Knowledge Examination.

By passing the ISTM exam, Dr. Luoma has proven he has solid
knowledge in travel medicine. ISTM is recognized as the leading
international organization of travel
health practitioners.
Those who passed the exam were granted a Certificate in Travel Health. The
certificate recognizes individual excellence in the field of travel medicine,
associated with pre-travel care and consultation. The exam focused specifically
on the level of knowledge that is necessary to practice travel medicine.
Some 423 examinees — including 242 physicians — hailing from
28 countries took the exam in New York City. It was open to all licensed
travel
medicine professionals, particularly physicians and nurse practitioners.
A native of Calumet, Dr. Luoma is the Community Assistant Dean of the U.P.
campus of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and
Chief Executive Officer of the Upper
Peninsula Health Education Corporation.
Board Certified in Family Practice,Dr. Luoma practices at FamilyCare
Doctors in the Peninsula Medical Center.He has been providing travel counseling and
immunizations for individuals and groups for more than 20 years. Dr. Luoma
is a charter member of ISTM and belongs to the American
Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
