Marquette General Hospital named one of the Nation's top cardiovascular hospitals by Thomson Reuters for fourth year in a row

For the fourth consecutive year, Marquette General Hospital has been named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® for cardiovascular care by Thomson Reuters.

Top Cardiovascular Hospitals

The study – 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks — examined the performance of 971 hospitals by analyzing clinical outcomes for patients diagnosed with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery or percutaneous cardiovascular interventions such as angioplasties.

Upper Michigan Cardiovascular Physicians and MGH perform more than 4,000 heart procedures per year, including balloon angioplasty, stents and atherectomy. They also perform more than 200 coronary artery bypass or valve replacements per year.

“There is one dominant reason why we’ve received this award for four years in row: teamwork,” said A. Gary Muller, FACHE, MGHS President and CEO. “Our talented medical and hospital staff have dedicated themselves to providing the highest quality patient care possible. They are most deserving of this honor and we are proud to have them on the MGHS team.”

The study, in its 11th year, found that the 100 Top Hospitals cardiovascular winners have:

  • 17 percent lower mortality rates for heart attack patients.
  • 10 percent lower mortality rates for heart failure patients.
  • 27 percent lower mortality for bypass surgery patients.
  • 22 percent lower mortality following PCI.
  • Fewer post-operative complications — 99 percent of patients were complication-free.
  • Close to 12 percent shorter average hospital stay.
  • 12 percent lower cost per case.

"Heart disease is a significant healthcare challenge nationwide,” said Dr. Thomas LeGalley of Upper Michigan Cardiovascular Associates, PC, and on staff at MGHS. “Upper Michigan Cardiovascular Associates’ physicians have worked closely with Marquette General Heart Institute staff to provide the most up-to-date technology and highest level of patient care. It’s very rewarding to see these efforts recognized.”

The 2009 winners were announced November 16 in Modern Healthcare magazine.
