Marquette General Hospital Named one of the Nation's Top Cardiovascular Hospitals for two years in a row

For the second year in a row, Marquette General Hospital (MGH) has been named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® for cardiovascular care by Thomson Healthcare (formerly Solucient).
The annual Thomson Healthcare award is based on hospitals' performance for the treatment of congestive heart failure, heart attacks, open heart surgery and angioplasty.

The 2007 Thompson 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success award winners were announced November 19 in Modern Healthcare Magazine. The study looked at almost 1,000 hospitals in the United States and analyzed outcomes.

“We are the only hospital within hundreds of miles to receive this designation, and we're very honored and grateful to be recognized again this year,” said MGHS CEO A. Gary Muller, FACHE.

“This award is a reflection of the talent and quality of our physicians, nurses, staff and employees. Most of all, it verifies that our patients receive care that is second to none. This is one example why residents of the Upper Peninsula do not need to go any farther than Marquette General Health System for the best care to be found in the country."

Among the key findings from the 2007 Thomson 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success study are that award winners reported hospital stays that were 12 percent shorter, on average, than peer hospitals; the 100 Top Hospitals reported costs that averaged 13 percent — or about $2,000 — less per case than peer hospitals; and the 100 Top Hospitals performed nearly two-thirds more coronary artery bypass grafts and percutaneous coronary interventions, such as angioplasty.

“This award is a real credit to the teamwork focused on each patient at the Marquette General Heart Institute,” said Cardiovascular-thoracic Surgeon Dr. Doug Baldwin of Upper Michigan Cardiovascular Associates, PC. “We take great pride in achieving a national benchmark level performance, especially two years in a row. We work very hard to assure that our patients receive the highest national standards of care, and it's very gratifying to see these efforts recognized.”

Since 1978, when heart surgery was first performed at MGH, more than 13,000 percutaneous coronary interventions (angioplasties) and approximately 8,500 heart surgeries have been performed at Marquette General. In addition, more than 30,000 diagnostic catheterizations have been performed.

"Our goal has always been to provide the best possible heart care for the people in the Upper Peninsula,” said Dagmar Raica, program director of the Marquette General Heart Institute. “Receiving this designation for the second time validates the team effort and commitment of the cardiologists, the cardiovascular surgeons and hospital staff.”

Thomson Healthcare scored facilities in eight key performance areas: risk-adjusted medical mortality; risk-adjusted surgical mortality; risk-adjusted complications; core measures score, which is a set of basic care practices that should be used for all heart attack and heart failure patients; percentage of coronary artery bypass graft patients with internal mammary artery use; procedure volume; and the average length of stay and cost.

The measures were calculated for three classes of hospitals with the following number of winners in each, and include: Teaching with cardiovascular residency programs, 30 winners; Teaching without cardiovascular residency programs, 40 winners; and Community, 30 winners.

Thomson Healthcare is the leading provider of decision support solutions that help organizations across the healthcare industry improve clinical and business performance.
