Marquette General Surgical Weight Loss Center
recognized for high-quality care in bariatric surgery
The Marquette General Surgical Weight Loss Center has been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.
The ASMBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.
The Marquette General Surgical Weight Loss Center at Marquette General Hospital offers a comprehensive approach to treatment. Board-certified surgeon Dr. Wayne English, a specialist in weight loss surgery, heads a team of medical experts in surgery, anesthesiology, health psychology, nursing, nutrition and exercise. This highly skilled team provides continuous support before and after surgery to help patients with the physical, emotional and social issues associated with morbid obesity.
“This designation reaffirms the commitment, expertise, and quality of care and services we provide to our patients,” said Marquette General Health System President and CEO A. Gary Muller, FACHE. “I thank Dr. English and his exceptional multidisciplinary team who are focused on improving the health of our patients.”

To earn a Center of Excellence designation, the Marquette General Surgical Weight Loss Center underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes were collected.
The Surgical Review Corporation, an organization dedicated to pursuing surgical excellence, formulates and establishes the rigorous standards with which the Marquette General Surgical Weight Loss Center and other Centers of Excellence must comply. Also, Medicare requires that any Medicare patient wishing to pursue bariatric surgery must do at a facility that is designated as a Center of Excellence by the ASMBS.
Obesity has become a significant national health issue, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that 66 percent of all U.S. adults are overweight or obese. Morbid obesity is closely correlated with a number of serious conditions that severely undermine the health of overweight patients, including heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

“Bariatric Surgery can help obese patients manage these serious conditions,” said Marquette General Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Wayne English, who has increased the number of bariatric surgical procedures at Marquette General from zero to 201 in 21 months. “Surgical treatment, when combined with behavior modification, offers hope to those who have tried repeatedly to lose the excess weight and keep it off. Our comprehensive program is designed to make sure that these patients are mentally and physicially prepared for surgery and their new lifestyle.”
As a pioneering organization designating Centers of Excellence based on top quality care and efficacious outcomes, the ASMBS, with the help of the SRC, is working to align the common interests of patients, surgeons, hospitals and insurers, all of who suffer when complications develop after surgical care.
The Marquette General Surgical Weight Loss Center offers free monthly bariatric surgery support groups and free bariatric surgery seminars presented by leading professionals.
