Marquette General hosts “Women and Stroke Dialogue”
May 2
Stroke kills twice as many women as breast cancer and is the leading cause of disability for women. On May 2, during National Stroke Awareness Month, the Marquette General Neuroscience Center will host a free community health program entitled, “Women and Stroke Dialogue,” from 12:15-1:15 pm in conference room one.
“More women than men die of stroke each year in the United States,” Hunt said, “and more than six of 10 stroke deaths occur in women. Female patients have different causes and risk factors for stroke compared with men, including migraine, pregnancy, oral contraceptive use and ruptured aneurysms.
”Women may also have the traditional stroke risk factors such as high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, and diabetes,” said Hunt. “Warning signs in either women or men can include sudden severe headache, numbness, trouble walking, and trouble speaking or understanding speech.
“Everyone needs to become educated about these warning signs, because the person suffering a stroke may be unable to communicate, or unwilling to accept that they may be having a stroke,” Hunt said.
The Women and Stroke Dialogue event will feature a satellite presentation by distinguished neurologist Marilyn M. Rymer, M.D. from the Mid-America Brain and Stroke Institute at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City.
Dr. Rymer is internationally recognized for her innovative research and treatment of stroke. The videoconferenced presentation will be followed by a question and answer period.
This program, sponsored by an educational grant from Genentech, will provide an innovative forum to educate women about the prevalence, risk factors and symptoms, and need for rapid, emergency treatment. Men are also encouraged to attend.
To reach the Marquette General Conference Center from the parking deck, follow the signs on the third floor skywalk level to the conference center. From ground level
parking, enter the hospital using the “East Entrance” under the glass canopy (across College Avenue from the main entrance), take the elevator to the third floor and turn right. Maps of the hospital campus are available here >>.
