This past season, Anderson led Michigan Tech to its first-ever GLIAC Championship. The league's longest-tenured coach in his 18th season, Anderson took a program that was eliminated due to budget cuts in March of 2003 and resurrected it to its highest level in 82 years of existence. For his efforts, he was named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region 3 Coach of the Year in Division II.

Anderson graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1974, where he participated in football, wrestling, and track. Anderson excelled on the wrestling mat and was a three-time Upper Peninsula champion while compiling a 78-5-1 overall record. He also was a two-year all-conference performer in football.

Anderson graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1978, receiving his undergraduate degree in industrial education. At NMU, he was a four-year letter winner in wrestling and earned All-America honors in the 132-pound weight classification in 1976. Anderson posted an impressive 72-30-2 record in his four years as a Wildcat grappler.

The annual Sports Medicine Update will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, in the MGH Conference Center. The conference, which will also cover topics in injuries, rehab services and co-ed athletes, is designed for coaches of community and school athletic programs, athletic trainers, physical therapists, EMTs, athletes and parents.

Dr. John Lehtinen, Director of Sports Medicine at Marquette General, will provide the welcoming address as well as give a presentation on rehab services available at Marquette General.
In addition, Julie Rochester, an athletic trainer at Northern Michigan University, will speak on “Common Sports Injuries,” while Mike Geary, women’s basketball coach at Northern Michigan University, will address, “A Woman’s Place: In the Game.”

Dr. Lehtinen said the annual Sports Medicine Update is one of the health system’s most popular, providing a wealth of knowledge to a diverse audience.

“This has proven to be an excellent conference,” Dr. Lehtinen said. “Attendees will be provided the latest updates in the field of sports medicine from a talented array of speakers. It offers an outstanding opportunity to learn from the experts.”

The fee for the Sports Medicine Update is $25. This includes registration, a snack, lunch, refreshment breaks and handouts. Students with a valid ID will be charged $12.50.

The Marquette General Conference Center is located in the East Building on College Avenue. Participants are asked to park in Lot A, located at the corner of Hebard Court and College Avenue. Attendees are asked to enter the hospital through the East Entrance canopy, take the elevator to the third floor, and exit to the right.
