Physician
from Scotland visits Marquette General to learn about Telehealth
capabilities
Marquette
General Hospital recently hosted a physician from Scotland. Dr.
Sandy Baird, a
veterinary surgeon from the University of Glasgow
in Scotland, spent several days at MGH studying its Telehealth
capabilities.
A 2004 recipient
of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Traveling Fellowship
Award, Dr. Baird chose Michigan, and
Marquette General in particular, to conduct research on telehealth.
Dr. Baird cited similar terrain, comparable populations, and
the notoriety of the U.P. Health
Care Network as reasons to visit.
He anticipates initiating veterinary telehealth in Scotland to
help clinicians deliver treatment quickly and safely while reducing
travel time and expense.
Sally Davis,
Program Director of Telehealth, said Marquette General thoroughly
enjoyed Dr. Baird’s visit. “It
was a unique opportunity for us to share our network with a physician
from across the globe,” Davis said. “We were able to
give him his first experience with clinical uses of the technology.

Stephanie Bixler and a patient. Bixler, BSN, MSN, is a Certified
Adult Nurse Practitioner, Certified Wound Care Nurse and Wound
Care Specialist in the Infectious Disease Specialist office in
the Peninsula Medical Center.

A growing number
of MGH physicians and practitioners are making telehealth services
available to their
patients. For more information about the Telehealth program
