Marquette General, National Multiple Sclerosis Society to host Spring MS Conference

*Registration deadline April 23

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society– Michigan Chapter will be hosting a U.P. Regional Spring Conference on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Marquette General Hospital in Conference Room 1.

The conference will feature a lunch discussion with the new NMSS-Michigan Chapter President, Elena Sullivan, and two topics will be presented, Research Update 2008: Myelin Repair and Emergency Preparedness.

The topic Research Update 2008: Myelin Repair will be presented in a video program followed by a live question-and-answer session with Marquette General Physician Debra Morley M.D., Ph.D., of Neurology Associates of Marquette.

“People with multiple sclerosis want to know what the latest research shows,” said Sherry Johnson, U.P. Region chair for the NMSS-Michigan Chapter. “Myelin repair is a frontier in MS research, and this program will help us understand the latest research news. We are fortunate to have Dr. Morley answer questions in person.”

The topic Emergency Preparedness, with an emphasis on people with disabilities, will be discussed by Upper Peninsula experts Paula Susmark of the American Red Cross, and Walter Slater of the Salvation Army. Barb Mackenzie, the NMSS regional program manager, will augment the program with new materials from the NMSS to help families prepare for emergencies.

During the lunch discussion, NMSS-Michigan Chapter President Elena Sullivan will meet and listen to all participants, and learn their thoughts, ideas and hopes concerning MS.

This program will be held at Marquette General Hospital Conference Center. To reach the Conference Center, park in Lot A on the corner of College Avenue and Hebard Court, enter the hospital through the East Entrance, take the elevator to the third floor, and exit to the right. For those using the parking deck, take the skywalk across College Avenue, turn left in the corridor and follow signs to the Conference Center.

Registration deadline is April 23. The fee is $5 and includes lunch. People with MS and family members are encouraged to attend. Scholarships are available.
