MGHS School of EMT offering Medical First Responder course in February
All applications must be received by January 26, 2009

The School of Emergency Medical Technology at Marquette General Health System will again offer a Medical First Responder course beginning in early February. All applications must be received by January 26, 2009.

Medical First Responders, the initial level in pre-hospital care, are responsible for emergency first aid and basic life support of the patient prior to the arrival of an ambulance.

The MFR course is scheduled to begin February 10, 2009 with a completion date of April 23, 2009. Classes will be held on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 6 - 10 p.m. in the MGHS School of EMT training classroom, located in room 2306 of Northern Michigan University’s University Center in Marquette. Other hospitals throughout the Upper Peninsula can attend the class via videoconference. The actual availability of classes at local hospitals will be dependent upon minimum enrollment at each site.

The cost of the course is $650 and includes the cost of books. Additional National Registry and State license fees will be the responsibility of the student after the course ends.

A recent EMS recruitment drive by Michigan’s Region 8 (Upper Peninsula) Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Network has spurred a great demand for this level of EMS education. Some local EMS and Fire agencies throughout the Upper Peninsula have expressed interest in recruiting new members and may pay a portion of the course fees for eligible candidates, or may be able to assist with tuition costs or reimbursements.

The program consists of 104 total hours of didactic and practical classes. The practical portion will include intensive training on a wide variety of emergency medical skills and equipment, and the didactic portion will consist of quizzes, homework, lectures, and a written and practical exam after each module.
