oncologist/hematologist returns to Marquette
Dr. Aaron Scholnik leaves MSU to return ‘home’

A
highly respected oncologist/hematologist recognized by many in
the Upper Peninsula has returned to Marquette
to practice medicine.

Dr. Aaron Scholnik
And, frankly, he couldn’t be happier.
Dr. Aaron Scholnik, who previously was on staff at Marquette
General Health System for 24 years, has returned to Upper Peninsula
Hematology/Oncology Associates
in the Peninsula Medical Center. He begins seeing patients on Monday, Sept.
20.
“
Coming back to Marquette is like coming back home,” said Dr. Scholnik,
who left Marquette in 1999 to become an associate professor in the Division
of Hematology/Oncology at Michigan State University’s College of Human
Medicine.
“What I have found is Marquette has a gem of a medical community. When
I see how the Marquette medical staff takes care of the patients in the community,
with their organization of patient care, it’s heads and shoulders above
most. As far as quality and organization, Marquette has one of the best medical
communities around. There is great satisfaction in taking care of patients in
that kind of environment.”
During his MSU professorship, he regularly held clinics for
oncology and hematology patients at the MSU Breslin Cancer
Center. He was also Operations Officer
of the MSU Cancer Treatment Consortium; Principal Investigator
for
the National
Surgical
Adjuvant
Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP); and most recently, Medical Director of
the Clinical Trials Office for the Great Lakes Cancer Institute (GLCI).
“
I enjoyed my time at Michigan State, and some things I was involved with were
very successful,” Dr. Scholnik, 62, said.
Dr. Scholnik holds several awards, including the 2002 Outstanding Clinician
of the Year from MSU, and is a three-time winner of the Michigan Cancer
Consortium’s “Spirit
of Collaboration” award. In addition, he has been involved with various
studies, publication, presentations, lectures and administrative committees.
During his 24 years in Marquette, Dr. Scholnik served as Community Coordinator
for Medical Ethics at MSU in East Lansing; worked as the Medical Director
for the Upper Michigan Cancer Center in Marquette; served as Associate
Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at MSU; worked as attending physician
at Bell
Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming; served as Assistant Clinical Professor
of Internal
Medicine at MSU; and worked as Medical Director of the MGHS Oncology Unit.
He’s looking forward to resuming active participation in the Marquette
community and the Upper Peninsula.
“
I love the natural beauty of the area, the wholesomeness, positive attitude
and sincerity of the people,” he said. “There is more happening
in Marquette than any one person could take advantage of.
“ There are many opportunities for community involvement, from a medical
standpoint as well as civic and social. Perhaps being a bigger frog in a
smaller pond
is fulfilling. And, I really enjoy taking care of patients and interacting
with colleagues. This place grows on you.”
Dr. Scholnik performed a fellowship in hematology and medical oncology
at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. He completed
a residency
in internal medicine and internship in medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Scholnik earned his medical degree at Chicago Medical School and holds
an undergraduate degree from Brown University in Providence, R.I.
