Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program graduates five family medicine specialists

Dr. Joel Dank is a native of Iron Mountain; Dr. Jennifer Dehlin is a native of Houghton; Dr. Emily Godec is a native of Marquette

Marquette General Health System, in conjunction with the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation, held its 27th annual Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program graduation on Friday, June 20, at Upfront and Company in Marquette.

Five physicians graduated from the three-year program and will be practicing medicine in the Upper Peninsula. Upon completing their certification examination, they will be board certified in the specialty of family medicine.

"The 2008 class is an outstanding group of graduates," said Dr. Bill Short, program director of the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program. "They are excellent family physicians who will provide outstanding care to patients throughout their careers. All five plan to stay in the Upper Peninsula, caring for patients in Delta, Schoolcraft and Marquette counties. We are very proud of this group.”

The Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program is the Upper Peninsula’s only post-graduate medical education program. Affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, the program trains physicians in the specialty of family medicine with emphasis on practice in rural areas.

This is the first time ever in the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program history that all graduates are staying and practicing in the Upper Peninsula.

Maciej Czechowski, MD – Dr. Czechowski is a native of Windsor, Ontario, and a graduate of FJ Brennan High School. He earned his medical degree from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, and his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Queen’s University in Ontario. He will practice family medicine at Doctors Park Family Physicians in Escanaba. He is the son of Alicja and Marek Czechowski.

Joel Dank, MD – Dr. Dank is a native of Iron Mountain, and a graduate of Iron Mountain High School. He earned his medical degree from Michigan State University, completing his last two years at the Upper Peninsula Campus. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Northern Michigan University. Dr. Dank will practice family medicine at Negaunee Medical Associates, joining Dr. Allan Olson and Dr. Lisa Long. He is married to Betsy Dank and has one child, James. He is the son of Jim and Mary Dank of Saint Cloud, Minn.

Jennifer Dehlin, MD – Dr. Dehlin is a native of Houghton, and a graduate of Houghton High School. She earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan, and her undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Michigan Technological University. Dr. Dehlin will practice family medicine at Lakewood Medical Associates in Harvey, joining Dr. Stuart Johnson and Dr. Emily Godec. She is married to Christopher Dehlin, MD, and has one child, Samuel. She is the daughter of Dr. Glenn and Mrs. Gail Mroz of Houghton.

Jennifer Dehlin, MD

Chris Dums, MD – Dr. Dums is a native of Hayward, Wisc., and a graduate of Hayward High School. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and his undergraduate degree in geology and biology from Dartmouth College. Dr. Dums will practice emergency medicine in Manistique. He is the son of Dan and Ruth Dums.

Emily Godec, MD – Dr. Godec is a native of Marquette, and a graduate of Marquette Senior High School. She earned her medical degree from Michigan State University, completing her last two years at the Upper Peninsula Campus. She earned her undergraduate degree in environmental conservation and human physiology from Northern Michigan University. Dr. Godec will practice family medicine at Lakewood Medical Associates in Harvey, joining Dr. Stuart Johnson and Dr. Jennifer Dehlin. She is married to Scott Medlyn, and is the daughter of Kathy and Jerry Godec of Marquette.

Emily Godec, MD

The Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program began in 1979. The program's purpose is to train physicians in the specialty of Family Medicine, with emphasis on practice in rural settings such as the Upper Peninsula. The program has now produced 140 graduates, many of whom continue to practice in the U.P.
