MGHS featured in information technology security magazine
Health system touted for innovated remote-access network
Marquette
General Health System is prominently featured in the May 2004
edition of SC Magazine, a security magazine
for information technology (IT) professionals, for its innovative
solution to a secure remote-access network problem.

Greg Gagnon
In the two-page article, Greg Gagnon, supervisor of enterprise
systems and services at Marquette General, explains IT’s
move from an Internet-protocol virtual private network (IPsec
VPN) to a secure-socket-layer virtual private network (SSL VPN)
after long nights of off-hour service calls.
The prior IT system required users to install software onto their
computers in order to log on to the network. With other software
interfering and users not entirely familiar with the new software,
many users were prevented from accessing what they needed. This
led to MGHS technical support calls in the middle of the night.
According to Gagnon, the new remote-access network allows physicians
and engineers to access tools and data from any remote location
with an Internet connection via standard web browser. Decreased
issues on the user end lead to less technical support, eliminating
the time and costs associated with the previous IPsec VPN. Therefore,
physicians and IT engineers will save time, and Marquette General
will save money.
The new remote-access network required brief training for the
users and engineers, but so far, the changes have been positive,
Gagnon said.
