Becky Ohnmeiss placed first in Extemporaneous Writing, while
the team of Jamie Clement, Sarah Garage, Aaron Hayward and
Hannah Norman placed first in Creative
Problem Solving. The topics for both events were health related.
Garage and Ohnmeiss were also recognized as finalists in the Medical Terminology
Competition.
For their outstanding efforts, the students now quality for the state competition
to be held March 24-25 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City.
Norman and Garage are seniors at Gwinn High School, while Clement, Hayward
and Ohnmeiss are seniors at Marquette Senior High School.
MSHS Health Occupations instructor Cathy Thorrington said the five students’ performances
were truly outstanding.
“I’m so excited for them,” Thorrington said. “They were
ready and did very well. It made for a great bus ride home.”
Ohnmeiss’ question dealt with community service. Meanwhile, the four-person
team was given a problem and was then asked to make a 10-minute presentation
describing ways of tackling the problem.
“They broke up the presentation into four segments, so equally were represented,” Thorrington
said. “It was just phenomenal.”
Norman said she had a good feeling about her team heading into the competition.
“I had a feeling we were going to place first,” she said. “We
solved the problem by coming up with a pretty good solution.”
Each of the students received a gold medal for their efforts.
Thorrington said she and her talented students are very appreciative of Marquette
General’s support.
“Without the support of Marquette General, this accomplishment would not
have been possible,” she said. “We thank MGH for believing in our
students. They are the future.”
