Shannon, an associate professor of nursing at the College of Natural and Health Sciences at Lake Superior State University, replaces outgoing president and current RAC member Helen McGregor of Iron Mountain. Maki is a retired engineering technician with the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Shannon said she looks forward to serving as Board president. She’s confident the RAC will continue to play a leading role in tackling healthcare issues that are important to Upper Peninsula residents.

“I look forward to working closely with the Marquette General Board of Trustees and MGH administration to improve health care for all residents of the Upper Peninsula,” she said. “It’s my hope that our diverse group of Board members will bring valuable ideas to the Board of Trustees.”

Bradley Cory of Marquette, Peter Getzen of Menominee, Gary LaPlant of Escanaba, Jim Lorenson of Ironwood, McGregor and Dr. Dale Tahtinen of Houghton have each been re-appointed to additional three-year terms by the MGHS Board of Trustees.

Cory is a retired administrator of the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming; Getzen is the mayor of Stephenson and is a retired state police officer; LaPlant is the executive director of the Community Foundation for Delta County and director of fund development for the U.P.

Community Foundation Alliance; Lorenson is the Dean of Instruction at Gogebic Community College in Ironwood; McGregor is the editor of Mrs. McGregor’s Mature Citizen and Upper Peninsula Woman in Iron Mountain; and Dr. Tahtinen is vice president of government relations at Michigan Tech University.

Besides the aforementioned members, the RAC is comprised of Mary Beth Skupien, Ph.D, of Sault Ste. Marie, Bob Zander of Calumet, Bill Coffey of L’Anse, William Peltier of Newberry and Clyde Strasler of Manistique.

Skupien is the administrator of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians; Zander is the owner of the LeVeque Insurance Agency in Calumet and Chairman of the Board at Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center; Coffey is a retired friend of the court referee and retired state police officer; Peltier is the superintendent of Tahquamenon Area Schools; and Strasler is retired Chairman of the Board of the State Savings Bank of Manistique.

Formed in 1994, the RAC consists of 13 members — recommended by area providers — from across the Upper Peninsula. Appointed by the MGHS Board of Trustees, the RAC meets three times a year to consider, discuss and make recommendations to the MGHS Board of Trustees that will further the hospital's mission to improve healthcare in partnership with community hospitals and other providers throughout Upper Michigan.

Area residents who have concerns or questions of the RAC are encouraged to write the RAC at P.O. Box 200, Marquette, MI 49855, .
