Just ask the MGH nursing and support staff who have chosen
Dr. Wallace as the Second Annual winner of the Physician of
the Year,
The Nurses’ Choice.
Cindy Schroeder, a registered nurse at Infectious Disease Specialists
in the Peninsula Medical Center, presented Dr. Wallace the award
at the Quarterly
Medical Staff Meeting in mid-March.
Dr. Wallace is one of 20 MGHS physicians nominated for the award. There were
81 separate nominations.
Mary Umstead, a registered nurse at Marquette General, nominated Dr. Wallace.
“He answers his pages promptly and is always very courteous,” she
said. “When on the unit, he seeks input from the nurses and is always willing
to answer questions. He is a very good teacher.”
Social Worker Sharon Calovecchi echoed those thoughts.
“He’s always kind, caring, compassionate and courteous,” Calovecchi
said. “Dr. Wallace always takes the time to discuss medical concerns with
both staff and patients. He’s very deserving of this award.”
Added RN June Wickstrom, a Case Manager: “Dr. Wallace is always kind
and courteous with patients and staff. He always takes the time to explain
any questions asked.”
Wallace, a member of Infectious Disease Specialists in the Peninsula Medical
Center, said he was pleasantly surprised with winning the award.
“It’s always nice to be recognized by your colleagues, but it’s
an even bigger honor to be recognized by the nursing staff. They are the ones
who do all the hard work,” Dr. Wallace said. “A lot of times they’re
not fully appreciated for all the work they do. I consider this a very nice honor.”
Said Kirk Matthews, Social Work Supervisor: “I cannot think of a more
deserving employee, let alone physician.”
Board-certified in infectious diseases and internal medicine, Dr. Wallace
performed a fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Kansas
Medical Center.
He completed his residency in internal medicine and his internship in categorical
medicine at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX. He earned
his medical degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine.
In 2004, the award was presented to Dr.
James Klena, a cardiac, thoracic
and vascular surgeon on staff at Marquette General.
