Shaping MI Future
New pediatric weight management program
Michigan has weighed in as one of the top ten heaviest states
for the past 14 years. With 24% of Michigan’s high school
students overweight, or at risk for becoming overweight, health
experts are gearing healthy living programs toward a younger population.
Shaping
MI Future, a Marquette General Weight Management program,
educates youth and their families about how lifestyle changes
today can lead to a healthier life tomorrow. Monica Nelson, registered
dietitian and program coordinator is excited about the Shaping
MI Future program. “Our program stresses understanding the
division of responsibility when it comes to food. Parents struggle
with becoming the ‘food police’ and that rarely works.”
The program includes a multi-disciplinary team, states Nelson,
“and families have the opportunity to work with exercise
specialists as well as registered dietitians.”
Shaping MI Future is available to ages 7-17. The 12-week program
includes personalized assessments and plans for nutrition and
fitness, 3-month YMCA family membership, medical supervision and
group classes.
Shaping MI Future begins March 7 and runs through May 23. Cost
of the program is $240.00 with half due at registration. Insurance
may cover a portion. A sliding fee scale and scholarships are
also available.
