Marquette General, Rangers to hold second annual “Paint the Rink Pink” event to raise money for breast cancer patients
The Marquette Rangers hockey team is partnering with Marquette General Hospital and the Marquette General Foundation on the second annual fundraiser to benefit the Marquette General Cancer Center. The effort will culminate on Thursday, October 23 at 7 p.m. with the second annual “Paint the Rink Pink” home game at Lakeview Arena, where the Rangers will wear customized pink jerseys that will be auctioned off at the end of the game.

Marquette Ranger’s Head Coach, Kenny Miller, announces that the Rangers are playing an important role to raise money for breast cancer patients. The second annual Paint the Rink Pink home game will be played Thursday, October 23 at 7p.m., where the player’s pink jerseys will be auctioned off at the end of the game. The Marquette General Cancer Center will be selling pink shirts with the Rangers logo for $15. For more information on bidding on the jerseys, or purchasing shirts and tickets, please contact the Marquette General Foundation at (906) 225-6914.
Several of the jerseys will be on display throughout Marquette General Hospital and at Lakeview Arena until the Thursday, October 23 game and auction. The minimum bid for a jersey will be $100. Two of the jerseys are available for bidding on the Marquette General Foundation Web site at www.mgh.org/foundation.
“We hope to raise more money this year, which will go towards the purchase of a digital mammography machine,” said Terry Reser, Marquette General Cancer Center program director. “Digital mammography provides early detection of breast abnormalities and increases the chance of detecting abnormalities in younger women, since they have much denser breast tissue.”
The new digital screening equipment allows a higher quality image to be taken of the breast tissue than previously possible with x-ray. The higher quality image appears in seconds onto a special high-resolution monitor, where the radiologist can review the images, change the brightness and contrast, and zoom in on specific areas. The images can also be sent electronically to the physician and patient - instead of being hand delivered - without losing resolution and quality.
With a spending plan in place for the funds that will be raised this year, Marquette General Foundation President Patrick Bray said last year’s proceeds are already benefiting cancer patients.
“Last year’s event raised $19,275, which is being used for a high-risk breast cancer clinic, certification for a Cancer Center nurse in breast health and providing prostheses to uninsured cancer patients,” said Bray.
Rangers Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Mark Evans, said last year’s event was a great success and there are some exciting new changes this year.
“We’re very excited as an organization to play our small part in this fundraiser,” said Evans. “Our job with the Ranger’s is to build quality hockey players, but we’re also in the business of
building quality young men. Introducing the players to a chance like this to make a difference in the lives of people in the Upper Peninsula is big for us. Our returning players have been talking to our rookies about how great last year was, so there’s a high level of excitement about playing the game this year. We’re hoping for a great turnout, for people to come and support the Cancer Center and to top last year’s proceeds.”
