Marquette General Operating Room sets three-year record of providing patient care

The Operating Room at Marquette General Hospital has set a three-year record number of inpatient and outpatient surgeries during the fiscal year of 2008, contributing to a positive financial turnaround in fiscal year 2008.

The OR staff performed 9,720 surgeries in 2008. The increase in surgical cases is contributed to new specialists who came on board in the past few years in the areas of urology, orthopedics, bariatrics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and general surgery, who combined, have provided surgical care for more than 1,600 patients.

Marquette General Board certified surgeon Dr. Wayne J. English (top left) a specialist in weight loss surgery, heads a team of medical experts in a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, one of the most common gastric bypass surgerys today. Dr. English has contributed to the increase in surgical cases at MGHS by increasing the number of bariatric surgeries from zero to 163 within two years.

“The three-year record is fuel for an economic turnaround by increasing options and the types of surgeries available for patients and allowing patients more opportunities to receive high quality care,” said MGHS president and CEO A. Gary Muller, FACHE.

Marquette General is the only hospital in the Upper Peninsula that performs coronary artery bypass, heart valve, trauma, endoscopic, cranial, and spine with instrumentation surgeries. MGH is leading the State of Michigan in the number of minimaze procedures for atrial fibrillation and is the only hospital in the UP performing the procedure.

“As the regional referral center for the Upper Peninsula, Marquette General is continually enhancing patient services, and providing those services to people throughout the UP,” said John Wells, director of Surgical Services at MGHS. “The fact that we’re able to accommodate this record-setting number speaks volumes about the dedicated, hardworking surgeons and staff.”

The OR at Marquette General Hospital features ten operating room suites, which provide state of the art technology for a wide array of surgical procedures. Over 40 board certified surgeons are on staff with specialties including vascular, neurosurgery, OB/GYN, orthopedics, spinal, urology, eye, ear, nose and throat, plastic general and open-heart surgery. Due to newer techniques available such as laser and endoscopic surgery, many procedures can be done on an outpatient basis.
