The team of Bridget Holliday, Traci Jutila, Thomas LaTourneau
and Gabrielle Trudeau — sponsored by Marquette General Health System — is busy
preparing for the prestigious National Leadership Conference in Nashville,
Tenn., in June. At the HOSA State Leadership Conference held in Traverse City
in April, the four MSHS seniors earned the right to advance to the national
competition following a first-place finish in “Creative Problem Solving” Earlier,
they had placed first in regional competition in Escanaba.
MSHS Health Occupations instructor Cathy Thorrington said the quintet excelled
in the state competition. After being presented a problem, they were asked
to make a 10-minute presentation describing ways of solving the problem.
“They broke up the presentation into four segments, so equally were represented,” Thorrington
said. “I am so proud of them.”
The accomplishment marks the first time a HOSA team from Marquette has advanced
to the nationals, Thorrington said.
Holliday said winning the state competition was an absolute thrill.
“We knew our presentation went well,” she said. “The judges’ comments
were very positive. It feels good.”
The group “is really excited” to compete at the next level, Holliday
added.
“We’d like to get first, but mostly, we want to do well for ourselves,” she
said.
The National Leadership Conference will be held June 22-25.
Several other Health Occupation students excelled in regional competition
in Escanaba. According to Thorrington, the team of Amanda Jisa, Samantha
Slobodnik
and Brooke Setter earned second place in the “Creative Problem Solving” category.
In addition, Jutila-LaTourneau earned a second-place medal in “CPR/First
Aid” and Holiday and Samantha Slobodnik tied for third in “Medical
Terminology.”
“We’re very thankful to Marquette General for supporting our students
in this endeavor,” Thorrington said. “The students are very appreciative
of MGHS for believing in them.”
Last season, five Health Occupations students — Aaron Hayward, Becky
Ohnmeiss, Hannah Norman, Jamie Clement and Sarah Garage — earned first-place
honors in regional competition.
Ohnmeiss had taken first in “Extemporaneous Writing,” while the
four others placed first in “Creative Problem Solving.” Garage
and Ohnmeiss were also recognized as finalists in the “Medical Terminology
Competition.”
