MGHS dietitians team up with
local schools
March is National Nutrition Month
Childhood obesity is on the rise. Children today
live more sedentary lifestyles than those of their parents or
grandparents due, in part, to excessive time playing video games,
watching television, and spending time at computers.
According to Registered Dietitian Carol Holman, Director of Nutrition
Services at Marquette General, dietary preferences and eating
patterns develop early in life. That's why dietitians from MGH
are visiting several elementary classrooms during National Nutrition
Month in March to talk with kids about healthful eating and active
play time.
Registered Dietitians Bonnie Brewer, Mary Charlebois, Irma Powers,
Pam Roose, Sherri Rule, Deb Sergey, Jacque Nyenhuis and Tracy
Major will talk with students in several classrooms at Superior
Hills, Sandy Knoll, Aspen Ridge, Superior Central, Birchview Elementary,
K.I. Sawyer Elementary, and Chocolay Children's Center. Kids will
learn age-appropriate information about topics such as:
| * |
Making
good choices for balanced nutrition, including adequate vitamins,
minerals and fiber. |
| * |
Choosing
a variety of nutritionally-rich foods from each food group
every day. |
| * |
Keeping
kids and families safe using the right steps in preparing,
handling and storing food. |
| * |
Finding
the balance between proper nutrition and physical activity.
Regular physical activity is important for overall health
and fitness. It helps control weight, promotes a feeling of
well-being and reduces the risk of chronic disease. |
The importance of kids and good nutrition was
emphasized by congressional passage of the Child Nutrition and
WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Reauthorization Act of 2004.
This law requires every school district in the country to implement
a wellness policy, beginning with the 2006-2007 academic year.
