Brothers recognized as Physicians of the Year,
The Nurses' Choice
Dr. James Addison and Dr. William Addison share honors from MGHS
nurses and support staff
Two physicians
who have each served Upper Michigan patients for almost thirty
years have been selected as joint recipients of the 2006 Physician
of the Year, The Nurses Choice award. It just so happens that
Emergency Physician Dr.
James Addison and Obstetrician/Gynecologist Dr.
William Addison are also brothers.

Nurses and support staff at Marquette General Hospital have high
praise for both of the Drs. Addison.
Emergency Department Registered Nurse Julie Nault submitted a
nomination for Dr. James Addison.
"He is always pleasant, always patient, calm and collected
in any crisis situation," Nault said.
Veteran Emergency Department RN Gayla St. Onge said, "He
is compassionate and one of the best diagnosticians I have had
the pleasure to work with in my 34 years of nursing."
"This award means a great deal to me, as it is coming form
the nurses, a group of people whom I greatly respect," said
Dr. James Addison. "With all the wonderfully skilled physicians
that they see on a daily basis, the fact that they have chosen
me for this award is especially meaningful."
Staff members who submitted nominations for the pair of brothers
cited many characteristics common to both. Among them were empathy,
integrity, willingness to teach, calm during crisis, and the ability
to lighten tension.
Judy Rudness, a registered nurse in the Family
Birthing Center, said that after Dr. William Addison retires,
she'll miss his wit as well as his skill.
"He is the best obstetrician I've seen in my 25 years of
nursing," Rudness said. "Our family chose him as our
obstetrician, from my mother to myself and my daughter,"
Family Birthing Center Social Worker Cara Zanetti echoed the sentiments
of others when she said, "Dr. Addison is always approachable
for questions, concerns and comments. He appreciates input from
nursing and social work. He is kind and caring--a real joy to
work with."
Family Birthing Center Nurse Manager Cindy Ampe RN summed it up
well in her nomination of Dr. William Addision.
"He is one of the most competent, professional, and kind
physicians I have had the privilege to work with," Ampe said.
"He is receptive to the needs of all his patients and very
respected by all of our staff."
Dr. William Addison noted that the brothers followed in the footsteps
of their father, the late Dr. Earl Addison of Crystal Falls. "Dad
was a great role model for all of us as he spent his entire career
as a small town general practitioner," he said. "Dad
cared deeply about all of his patients, and he worked tirelessly
during his entire career."
The most important factor in the selection of the recipients for
Physician of the Year, The Nurses' Choice award is the relationship
between the physicians and the hospital staff.
Marquette General CEO Bill Nemacheck said, "We and the residents
of the Upper Peninsula are very fortunate to have had these two
outstanding physicians providing care for the past 30 years. They
are very deserving of this recognition.
"They embody the spirit of the Physician of the Year, The
Nurses Choice award, Nemacheck said. "They exemplify the
best in teamwork between physicians and our patient care staff
on the front lines of hospital care."
A Michigan Tech University graduate, Dr. James Addison earned
his medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit and
completed his internal medicine residency at St. Joseph Mercy
Hospital in Ann Arbor. Board Certified in internal medicine, he
is a member of Marquette General Emergency Medicine Associates.
Board certified in obstetrics/gynecology, Dr. William Addison
received his bachelor's and medical degrees from the University
of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed his obstetrics/gynecology
residency at St. Joseph Mercy hospital in Ann Arbor and is a partner
in OB/GYN Associates of Marquette.
Previous recipients of The Physician of the Year award are Infectious
Disease Specialist John Wallace MD, and Cardiovascular-thoracic
surgeon James Klena MD.
