‘Walk for a Nurse’ fund-raiser
scheduled for May 8
Money raised will be used to help fund a nursing education scholarship

In an effort
to recruit potential candidates to the field of nursing and raise
money for a nursing education
scholarship, Marquette General Health System, the Michigan
Center for Nursing, the Michigan Health Council and the Michigan Nurses
Association are teaming up to offer a “Walk for a Nurse” fund-raiser
in May.
The fund-raiser, which will consist of a 2-mile, non-competitive walk and a
5-kilometer timed run, will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, in the Mattson
Lower Harbor Park.
The goal of the inaugural event is to recruit potential nurses to the profession
and raise money for a nursing education scholarship.
Even chairperson Laurie Neldberg-Weesen, RN, Program Director of the Upper
Michigan Neuroscience Center at Marquette General, said the “Walk for
a Nurse” committee is excited about the event.
“We're very enthused about our first ‘Walk for a Nurse’ fund-raiser,” she
said. “The ‘Walk’ will create awareness of the nationwide nursing
shortage, as well as provide an event that anyone can participate in to honor
a nurse in their lives.”
According to Neldberg-Weesen, funds raised will be used locally to (1) financially
assist a student pursuing a career in nursing, and (2) support the development
of the Michigan Center for Nursing — an organization dedicated to highlighting
exciting career opportunities in nursing.
The registration fee is $20 for adults 18 years of age and older, $10 for students
ages 12 to 18, and free for children under 12. Adults and students will receive
a “Walk for a Nurse” shirt as part of their entry fee.
Pre-registration will be held from 8 to 8:45 a.m. A registration
form is also
available.
“Walk for a Nurse” will include fruit and refreshments, along with
a number of prizes that will be drawn randomly.
