Two ICU nurses at Marquette General Hospital have earned advanced certification in neuroscience nursing. Registered Nurses Roxanne Filizetti and Trish Bough have earned certification as neuroscience registered nurses (CNRN) through the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing (ABNN).

Filizetti and Bough provide specialized care for patients with neurological conditions such as brain and spine surgery, post-trauma care, and post surgical care for carotid artery disease and blood vessel malformations such as arteriovenous fistulas in the brain. In addition to clinical practice, nurses receiving certification must demonstrate competency in consultation, research, administration or education in the neuroscience field. Certification is an important credential that attests to the achievement of specialty knowledge beyond basic nursing practice.

Filizetti has worked at MGH for 15 years and has been recognized as MGH Employee of the Month. She is certified as a Trauma Nurse Certified Clinician, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor and has taught critical care classes for MGH critical care nursing interns for the past four years.

Filizetti received her LPN from Northern Michigan University and earned her Associates Degree from Bay De Noc Community College in 2000. A graduate of Gwinn High School, Filizetti resides in Sands Township. She is the daughter of Rose Anderson and the late Reno Filizetti.

“I would like to dedicate my CNRN to the late Helen Miller who has always encouraged and supported my education,” said Filizetti.

Bough has worked in the MGH ICU for the past seven years as an RN Staff Nurse. She received her BS in Nursing from NMU. Bough has served in the Air Force.

A graduate of Brighton High School, Bough resides in Rock, Mich. She is the daughter of Noelle and Mike Bough.

CNRN status is granted for five years and is renewed through validation of continuing education and re-examination. There are currently only 2,500 nurses nationwide who have earned the CNRN designation.

The ABNN is the independent, not-for-profit corporation established to design, implement and evaluate a certification program for professional nurses involved in the specialty practice of Neuroscience Nursing.
