Board Certification of nurses plays an increasingly important role in the assurance of high standards of care for patients and their loved ones. Nursing, like health care in general has become increasingly complex. While a registered nurse (RN) license provides entry to general nursing practice, the knowledge-intensive requirements of nursing today require extensive education, as well as a strong personal commitment to excellence by the nurse. Certification in a nursing specialty takes it to the next level, ensures the nurse understands the standards of care established by the specialty and validates nursing knowledge and competency. Most certification requires that the candidate work the equivalent of two full-time years as an RN and a minimum of one year within the specialty. Candidates must also meet the rigorous continuing education requirements.

Deb Ducsay, RN, from the Family Birthing Unit said, “the whole certification process is a learning process, and by the time you have completed and passed the test you feel like you know a great deal about your specialty.”

Marquette General Hospital encourages national board certification for all its nurses. Reimbursement for testing fees is available through the Lillian Brooks Nursing Certification Fund through the Marquette General Foundation.

Dagmar Raica, VP, Chief Nursing Officer said, “achieving certification in one’s specialty area of nursing is an impressive accomplishment that indicates to all a mastery of knowledge, skills and abilities that contributes to better patient outcomes.”

There are many nursing certification specialties such as medical-surgical, pediatric, pain management, cardiac vascular, oncology, hospice, case management, emergency nursing, critical care and many others.

Please join Marquette General Hospital and the nation’s national nursing certification organizations in honoring those hardworking, dedicated nurses for their professionalism, and a job well done! If you are interested in providing a gift to the Lillian Brooks Nursing Certification Fund, please contact the Marquette General Foundation at 1-866-906-6914, 1-906-225-6914 or by e-mailing mg.foundation@mghs.org.
