A seasoned health care administrator, Muller has served for the past nine years as President and CEO of West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero, Louisiana, a 462-bed hospital and health system in the metropolitan New Orleans area.

During Muller’s tenure at West Jefferson, the hospital was named on the U.S. News and World Report list of Best Hospitals in 2001, 2002, and 2003. West Jefferson was one of three hospitals to remain open and functioning with minimal resources in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Muller has also served as Regional Vice-President of North Broward Hospital District in Fort Lauderdale, and in a variety of administrative and executive management roles at several hospitals and health systems throughout Florida.

A Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (F.A.C.H.E.), Muller holds an MBA from the University of Florida and bachelor’s degree in business administration from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

Marquette General Board President Tim Larson welcomed Muller and reviewed the six-month search that preceded Muller’s selection.

“We’re extremely pleased with the collaborative selection process that has involved employees, physicians, and community members,” Larson said. “We look forward to working with our new CEO as we implement a very dynamic strategic plan. Our fiscal year is already off to a strong start, and we anticipate a very smooth transition and a positive year as Gary assumes leadership of Marquette General Health System.”

Muller outlined the strengths of MGHS and the community that attracted him to the position.
“It is an honor to be selected to lead Marquette General Health System. What primarily attracted me to the opportunity is the strong community support, dedicated board, quality medical staff, and committed employee team,” said Muller. “The strong culture of quality patient care was obvious when I visited several areas of the hospital, and that speaks volumes about the high level of commitment by the teams of employees and physicians.

“The comprehensive scope of services available to the entire Upper Peninsula is a community asset that many people have worked hard to achieve, and that’s a real source of pride for the entire region,” Muller said. “I look forward to an even more successful future for MGHS. We will continue to emphasize patient satisfaction, physician partnerships, and support for all employees and other team members of the health system.

“In partnership with other community hospitals, physicians, and providers, MGHS has earned a solid reputation that I will work hard to strengthen and build on, to assure that Marquette General will continue to be a provider of choice for the entire Upper Peninsula and beyond,” he said.
Muller expressed his enthusiasm for working with community partners such as NMU and other educators, business and cultural leaders, the faith community, and elected officials at the local, state, and national level.

Muller has been active and held leadership roles in the Louisiana Hospital Association, the New Orleans Metropolitan Hospital Council, Catholic Charities of New Orleans, Florida Hospital Association, the American Hospital Association (AHA) House of Delegates and the AHA Regional Policy Board, and as an advisory board member at the University of Florida College of Health Professions.

Muller has been active in community life throughout his career. He has been president of chambers of commerce in several communities and held leadership positions in community, state, and national organizations.

Born in Texas, Muller traveled extensively while growing up, and met his wife, Sandi, while they were in high school together in New Orleans. Sandi was born in Muskegon, Michigan, and the Mullers have a Centennial family home near Traverse City in Bellaire, Michigan. Their two grown children, Adam and Anne, live in Houston, Texas. Muller’s personal interests include golf and Louisiana State University and University of Florida college sports.
