Marquette General physician receives Leader Among Peers Award

Dr. Don Fitch, of Doctors Park Family Physicians in Escanaba, is the recipient of the inaugural Leader Among Peers Award by Superior Care Partners, a service of Marquette General Health System. Dr. Fitch was presented the award by Dr. Frederick Hoenke, vice president and medical director of physician practices at MGHS, at a recent physician retreat.

The award recognizes Dr. Fitch for consistently demonstrating integrity, dedication, commitment, caring, optimism, steadfastness, adaptability, excellence in patient care, involvement, and a desire to continue life-long learning.

“It was a privilege and honor to present the Leader Among Peers Award to Dr. Fitch, who emulates the qualities of leadership every day,” said Dr. Hoenke. “He has managed to remain committed to the practice of medicine while achieving a healthy balance in work, family, faith, friends and the community. He continues to have fun and enjoys caring for patients even after more than 40 years of service.”

Thomas Moser, senior vice president of physician practices and regional operations at MGHS added, “Although I have only known Dr. Fitch for a short period of time, he stands out as a role model for others. He has a great sense of humor and an optimistic outlook, and treats all he meets with respect and dignity.”

Board certified in family practice, Dr. Fitch completed his internship at Hennepin County Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn., and earned his medical and undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. He completed a term of service with the United States Public Health Service in Poplar, Mo. and Rosebud, S.D. He then moved to Escanaba in 1962 where he continues to practice at Doctor’s Park Family Physicians.

He has been a member of the Delta County Medical Society, serving as president, secretary and treasurer and as a delegate to the State Medical Society. He has been a long-standing member of the Michigan State Medical Society, a diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice, a member of the Rampart Board of Directors, and a member of the MGH Home Health and Hospice Advisory Board.

Dr. Fitch and his wife, Paddy, have been married 51 years, and have three sons and seven grandchildren. Dr. Fitch and Paddy are very active with the Boy Scouts and have been since the late 1960s. They’re members of the Board of Directors for the Medical Care Access Coalition of Delta and Menominee Counties, members of the First Presbyterian Church in Escanaba, and Bay Sages of Delta County. Dr. Fitch also has an interest in music and has been a member of the Attic Brass and the Bell Choir at the First Presbyterian Church. Other interests include tennis, biking, running, sailing, skiing and backpacking.
