Mather Nursing Center patients received at Marquette General Hospital

All 109 residents evacuated

Fire at Mather Nursing Center

An early-morning fire Monday at Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming killed two people and another 109 patients were evacuated. The two died at Bell Hospital in Ishpeming.

Those evacuated were transported to the Ishpeming Township Hall.

Marquette General Hospital received 49 patients in its emergency department, including a fireman who was treated and released for smoke inhalation.

Sixteen patients were transferred to the Beacon House on Third Street in Marquette. Beacon House is a hospitality house primarily used as hotel style accommodations for family members of patients.

Staff from the Mather Nursing Center provided support at the Beacon House.

Some patients were also taken to Bell Hospital in Ishpeming.

Westwood High School was used as an evacuation center.

The fire was contained to a section of one wing. Damage estimates have not yet been determined.
