UP Hospital Volunteers Attend 58th Annual MAHA Conference
Dr. Hines from Portage Health featured speaker

Mackinac Island was the site for the 58th Annual Meeting and Educational Institute of the Michigan Association of Healthcare Advocates (MAHA), where UP hospital volunteers attended on behalf of UP-wide hospitals.

Upper Peninsula Emergency Physician, Dr. Mary Beth Hines, of Portage Health in Hancock, was among the many educational speakers and workshop presenters that attended the conference.

Dr. Hines’s presentation, titled “Ten Household Poisons That Kill,” highlighted common household items that emergency room physicians see first-hand. Household item are listed in order of greatest number of deaths and include helpful information on most:

· Carbon Monoxide: get a CO detector with a digital reader.
· Windshield wiper fluid and anti-freeze: keep in original containers as they look like popular drinks for kids
· Insecticides: these contain organophosphates and urethanes
· Oil of Wintergreen (not flavoring): contains methyl salicylate and one teaspoon contains seven grams of aspirin.
· Bathroom and toilet cleaners: keep area ventilated and wear gloves to safeguard yourself from acid.
· Rust removers: Wear gloves and work in ventilated area to safeguard yourself from hydrofluoric acid.
· Automatic dishwasher soap: contains alkalis.
· Drano and acids in oven and toilet cleaner.
· Rubbing Alcohol: do not use on an infant with a fever, since it can be lethal.
· Combination of Clorox and Ammonia

Important points to remember:
· Keep all chemicals in original container and label in compliance with the Upper Peninsula Poison Crisis Line, at 1-800-562-9781.
· Keep items out of the reach of children
· Use chemicals with gloves in a ventilated area
· Do not eat or drink while using chemicals
· Get a CO monitor and have your woodstove or furnace inspected yearly
