Health System Board of Trustees for his fifth term at the helm.

At its January 22 meeting, Stephen C. Mattson was newly elected
secretary, replacing Wayne Johnson, who has retired from the board
after 20 years of service. Paulette Lindberg and Richard A. Schaefer
were re-elected vice-president and treasurer/assistant secretary,
respectively. Marquette businessman Mick Vonck was elected as
a new member of the MGHS Board of Trustees.
“Marquette General is experiencing an exciting time in its
development,” Larson said. “With the establishment
of a bariatric surgery program and the addition of a hand surgeon,
our patients throughout the region have greater options for receiving
care in the Upper Peninsula.
“The hospital’s recent national recognition as a Level
II Trauma Center and a 100 Top Cardiovascular hospital,”
said Larson, “verify that patients coming here for treatment
receive the highest national standards in quality care.”
Larson said that Marquette General, like other hospitals nationwide,
is navigating the challenges of limited reimbursement while investing
in technologies necessary to maintain the high standard of care
that patients have come to expect.
“As hospitals evolve to electronic medical records and computerized
physician orders, the cost of technology and the culture shift
from paper to electronic records will result in better and safer
delivery of care,” said Larson. “As the Upper Peninsula’s
regional medical center, we are taking a leadership role in these
areas.
“We have also been very fortunate over the years to have
medical staff leadership that is forward thinking,” Larson
said. “The physicians take a tremendous amount of initiative
in introducing new and less invasive ways to care for our patients.”
Within the next month, Marquette General will complete the installation
of a Dual Source CT Scanner. Also expected in 2007 are the ownership
of the PET/CT service that has been onsite for the past two years,
the development of a musculoskeletal center, and the arrival of
the region’s first endocrinologist.
