Child Passenger Safety; upcoming parenting education events

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 214,000 children ages 14 and under were injured as occupants in motor vehicle-related crashes in 2004.

Secure your child’s car seat tightly in the car with a seat belt or LATCH system. If the car seat is loose and moves, your child may not be protected. Make sure you have a copy of the manufacturer’s instruction booklet for your child’s car seat and for your vehicle.

Follow these four recommended steps to help you choose and use a car and booster seat for your child:

1. REAR-FACING CAR SEATS in the back seat from birth to at least age 1 and at least 20 pounds.

2. FORWARD-FACING CAR SEATS in the back seat from at least age 1 and at least 20 pounds to about age 4 or 40 pounds.

3. BOOSTER SEATS in the back seat from about age 4 and 40 pounds to at least age 8, unless over 4’9”.

4. SAFETY BELTS at age 8 or older or taller than 4’9”. All children 12 and younger should ride in the back seat.

The best car seat for your child is one that fits your child, fits your vehicle and that you will use correctly every time. Be sure you set a good example by always wearing your seat belt, even for short trips.
