Karmanos
Cancer Center and Marquette General Hospital to Collaborate
Marquette General Cancer Center in Upper Peninsula and Detroit-Based
Cancer Center Affiliate
The Karmanos
Cancer Center and the Marquette General Cancer Center recently
signed an affiliation agreement to collaborate on cancer care
and research. As an affiliate of the Karmanos Cancer Center, the
Marquette General Cancer Center will continue to offer unique
cancer treatment options, and provide access to higher-level clinical
trials to patients living in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
As part of the agreement, physicians at the Marquette
General Cancer Center will be a part of the Karmanos Multidisciplinary
Team structure. This means cancer patients at the Center in Marquette
who need a second opinion may have a built-in review by Karmanos
Cancer Center physicians, who will provide input on proposed treatment
plans.
“Partnering
with the Marquette General Cancer Center, which serves the Upper
Peninsula, is a great opportunity for Karmanos and Marquette General
Hospital,” said John C. Ruckdeschel, M.D., president and
chief executive officer, Karmanos Cancer Institute. “This
collaboration will allow Karmanos physicians and researchers to
offer our colleagues in the Upper Peninsula access to advanced
clinical trials and an extended multidisciplinary approach to
cancer care.”
The Marquette
General Cancer Center is dedicated to the prevention of cancer
through the early detection of the disease, and the prolongation
of survival and overall improvement of a cancer patient’s
quality of life. Beyond providing cancer treatment, the Marquette
General Cancer Center also offers education, prevention, screening
and clinical trial opportunities to people in Upper Michigan.
The Center has been recognized by the American College of Surgeons
as a Community Cancer Center since 1984.
“The
most important benefit of this collaboration is for our patients. MGHS provided comprehensive
cancer care in the Upper Peninsula for more than 30 years, and
we want to expand the opportunities for patients to participate
in higher-level clinical trials, as well as having a formalized
consultation process with Karmanos.”
The affiliation
agreement will provide the Marquette General Cancer Center access
to the Karmanos Cancer Center’s advanced clinical research
and additional educational opportunities for Upper Michigan Cancer
Center physicians and staff.
Based in midtown
Detroit, the Barbara
Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is committed to a future free
of cancer. The Institute is one of 39 National Cancer Institute-designated
comprehensive cancer centers in the United States. Caring for
nearly 6,700 new patients annually on a budget of $216 million,
conducting more than 700 cancer-specific scientific investigation
programs and clinical trials, the Karmanos Cancer Institute is
among the nation’s best cancer centers. Through the commitment
of 1,200 staff, including nearly 300 faculty members, and supported
by thousands of volunteer and financial donors, the Institute
strives to prevent, detect and eradicate all forms of cancer.
John C. Ruckdeschel, M.D. is the Institute’s president and
CEO.
