Marquette General Nurses earn Hospice and Palliative Care certification
Three registered nurses from Marquette General Home Health and Hospice in Escanaba have earned their hospice certification. Amy Wilson, Mary Pat Johnson and Linda Hague are now Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses, which enables them to use the letters CHPN after their names.
The role of a CHPN is to provide nursing care for the hospice patient and their family, putting an emphasis on their physical, psychological and emotional needs when dealing with a restricting illness.
Amy Wilson has been employed at MGH since 1992. In addition to being a registered nurse, she served as Branch Manager for MGH Home Health and Hospice in Escanaba for eight years, and has been Hospice Administrator for the past six months. In holding these positions, Wilson is able to share her knowledge of hospice with the community and organizations as requested. She also participates in many local health fairs.
Wilson earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Lake Superior State (LSSU) in 2001. She earned her associate’s degree, also in nursing, at LSSU in 1980. She graduated from Escanaba Area Public High School in 1977.
Wilson currently resides in Escanaba, where she works with The Senior Companion Program, serving on their advisory committee and foundation board. She also teaches per diem for Bay de Noc Community College and Lake Superior State University.
Mary Pat Johnson has worked as a home health nurse for more than seven years, all while employed by MGH. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey and is also a chemotherapy certified nurse.
She previously held positions as a certified oncology nurse, a board member of the Eastern Pennsylvania/West New Jersey Chapter of the Oncology Nurses Association and a board member of the Baltimore Chapter of the Orthopedic Nurses Association.
Johnson resides in Escanaba, where she volunteers at Blessed Hope Baptist Church.
Linda Hague has worked for MGH Home Heath and Hospice as a nurse for six years. She earned her associate degree in nursing from Bay de Noc Community College in 2002. Linda is also a certified oncology nurse.
Hague currently resides in Escanaba where she is involved in church activities and is a hospice volunteer.
Both Mary Pat and Linda have received the MGH Outstanding Citizen of the Year awards in past years.
CHPN certification is a nationally recognized test to validate knowledge and experience in end-of-life care. It also helps to improve quality of care provided by MGH Home Hospice staff. Nurses are tested on their knowledge on the core curriculum of hospice/palliative care. To be eligible for the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN) examination, an applicant must hold a current, unrestricted nurse license for a recommended two-year minimum.
